Bringing Theatrics Back to Marketing: How A24’s The Drama is Using Unconventional Tactics to Charm Moviegoers.

Couple walking out of a wedding.

Film marketing has always followed a particular routine, one we all know well: audiences are greeted with a trailer, various ads on traditional and digital channels, some promotion featuring the film’s stars, and, hopefully, a box-office hit. But with the rise in the average cost of moviegoing and the continued success of film and TV streamers, the traditional film campaign is no longer sufficient to get people to the theaters. Audiences want intrigue, they want drama, and one of A24’s newest films set to premiere at the start of April is giving it to them.

About the Film

The Drama is a new A24 film starring actors Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, who play “an engaged couple whose relationship is put to the test in the days before their wedding” (Blackwood, 2026). Now, while the film itself seems to be a thrilling watch for viewers, it has also generated excitement among its potential audience through a strategic multi-channel marketing campaign. Reminiscent of the way in which audiences saw the unpredictable promotional efforts for the Marty Supreme film in December of 2025, from branded film merch to activations and collaborations with Druski (Ramachandran, 2026). The Drama has been able to use a similar strategy while maintaining a tone in their communications that is in line with the film’s wedding theme, and does not rely solely on using the film’s stars as spokespeople in promotion.

what makes the campaign unique

What first caught my eye in my feed and what I knew would make this promotional plan unique was a print ad the film’s marketers placed in the Boston Globe, featuring the Drama’s couple’s engagement announcement and a photo of the happy couple (Gomez, 2026). This tactic added a unique element to the film’s appeal prior to the release of the trailer, along with motivating the creation of user-generated content even among non-film buffs.

After that, while releasing lots of digital content on social platforms, including the film’s wedding-invite-style poster and photoshoots with the main actors, they moved on to setting another tactic into motion. This next step included releasing a website for the movie’s wedding guests with all the necessary info, including a pretty extensive list of activities to do in Boston. As for what to wear to see the movie, A24 has created 50 branded sweatshirts with pictures of Twilight-era Robert Pattinson and Challengers-era Zendaya in a kitschy design that viewers are already dying to get their hands on (Attard, 2026).

However, they didn’t stop there; they also created another website to tie into their event marketing tactic. It’s titled The Drama Wedding Chapel , it’s bright purple, and reminiscent of an early 2000s wiki page. This website allows users to apply to be married in a The Drama-themed wedding chapel in Las Vegas on the day that the film premieres in April.

Now, while I’m not recommending that any viewers do this, it is quite a way to build mental availability within audiences and spur on tremendous amounts of user-generated content, especially in a time when so many are waiting for a film to be on a streaming service before watching. So, regardless of how many stars the film gets on Letterboxd, I would rate their promotional campaign a 5 out of 5.
